Brett woke up in Gia’s bed, feeling more peaceful and at home than he had in his entire life.

His arms were wrapped around her. He’d held her all night. Her warmth, her softness, her scent all gave him the certainty that he was exactly where he was supposed to be.

Too bad it had to end when she awoke and revealed that she had a full spa day ahead of her.

“I can cancel it if you want to—”

“Don’t you dare,” Brett said. “It’s still your vacation. You deserve a massage and whatever pampering they’ll give you.”

Which meant that, after breakfast, he had a whole day of not seeing his beautiful Gia until dinner.

Having not had a workout for a few days, Brett decided to go to the onboard gym. There were several others in there, crowding the treadmills and weights.

He started with some squats and lunges and was about to move on to some arm work when a voice called out to him.

“Hey, can you give me a spot?”

Brett turned to see a man sitting on the weight bench.

“Sure thing.” Brett walked over and introduced himself, shaking his new buddy's hand. He learned that the man’s name was Bill.

He didn’t want to stare, so he stayed focused on the barbell and weights, but a flash in Bill’s eyes drew Brett’s attention.

An unnatural blue glow, flickering on and off in a mechanical way Brett had seen with only one person before.

Was Bill a cyborg?

Brett kept the question to himself, though. Wasn’t any of his business.

The man did a set of reps and then asked for more weight. Again. And again.

“Got a lot on your mind?” Brett asked since it seemed clear that Bill was trying to work something out.

“How can you tell?” the man asked.

“Just a general I’m-going-to-punish-my-body workout rather than a nice let’s-work-out-for-fun-on-vacation vibe about you.”

The man grunted, replaced the barbell, and finally sat up.

“It’s just”—Bill sighed and rubbed his face—"every time you think you have your shit figured out, life turns around and shows you that you don’t, you know?”

Brett barked out a loud laugh. Loud enough he drew looks from the other gym-goers. He waved his hand, signaling his apologies for disturbing them, but at least he’d managed to make Bill crack a grin.

“So you know what I mean.”

“Do I ever.” It was how he’d felt since the moment he laid eyes on Gia and realized that the world was laughing at his plan for an excitement-free future.

They swapped places, and Bill spotted Brett. They worked out in silence other than Brett’s grunts and the sound of the bar going back in the rack. They didn’t elaborate on their individual troubles but enjoyed their new friendship built on commiserating.

Bill left when Brett finished his reps, and Brett hopped on the treadmill, facing the endless ocean while running. With Bill gone, though, he had to face the thoughts he’d been avoiding.

He really, really liked Gia. Every moment he wasn’t with her, he thought about seeing her again. And the sex?

God. Being with her was like nothing he’d ever experienced.
